Erik Malm

Photographer, company director, musician and conductor

What can the future hold for a young, musical, outdoorsy person interested in photography and birdwatching? Quite a lot, as it turned out. Erik Malm has gained career success in a number of different fields.

A musician steps away from his instrument
After years studying music, as a solo clarinetist in Malmö Opera’s orchestra, and as the conductor of the Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble, Erik Malm chose a new career path. With his father and brother, he founded the successful family firm of Malmstolen AB, making high quality office chairs. Here, he was in charge of research and design, gaining a deep understanding of biomechanics, physiology and ergonomics. In parallel with this, he was developing a career as a professional photographer. With five acclaimed photography books of his own, it became ever clearer that life was taking a new direction. After nearly a quarter of a century, Malmstolen was sold to the biggest European group in the sector, and it was time for Erik to devote his energy to his art.

An invaluable mistake
At some point we’ve probably all moved the camera as we pressed the button, ending up with a blurry photograph. Erik Malm is no exception ... but his ‘failure’ became the starting point of an innovative new technique. The unwanted image had a certain something reminiscent of impressionist paintings. Erik began experimenting with longer exposures while deliberately moving the camera. This is a recognised, very difficult method, known as ICM – Intentional Camera Movement. Now, after many years’ practice, Erik has transformed the technique into a unique artistic style that touches people all over the world.

The power of persistence
‘Never stop trying’ has been a guiding principle in every part of Erik Malm’s life. An attitude which, together with the musician’s habit of practising until everything is firmly embedded, has led to the art project Dedicated to Life – a project in which Erik’s different worlds are woven together. The emotional power of music and the visual beauty of photography meet in a dialogue about life, our place in the universe and our relationship to life on our planet.
